Spec work involves producing artwork for a potential client with no guarantee that your work will be chosen and/or paid for. This practice is universally condemned by design organizations as harmful to both clients and designers alike. Spec-based design contests are a growing concern within my profession.

It is important to note that there are various types of design contests. Awards from industry competitions can be a valuable marketing tool for design professionals. Such contests will not require the creation of spec work to be considered for reward and recognition. In addition to bragging rights, winners are often featured in design annuals and websites. Entrance fees might be worth consideration when developing your annual budget for marketing and promotions.
